Project Natal: Support for Multiple Players, Finer Movements Confirmed

One of the big stories of this years E3 has undoubtedly been Microsoft’s Project Natal. And with good reason – the tech looks like something out of a sci-fi film. Of course you can’t take everything that the marketing hype says at face value. The big questions surrounding the Natal are: how accurate is it? Does it work for more than one player? According to project director Kudo Tsunoda and the people he gave hands-on demo’s for, it’s surprisingly accurate, and it can support multiple “inputs.”

Tsunoda claimed that, if a game was designed for it, the Natal should even be able to pinpoint finger movements on a person’s body, depending on their distance from the unit. As far as multiplayer support, the basic Breakout-style game featured in the press demo, “Ricochet,” already supports this. The Natal is able to accurately model and receive input from at least two separate bodies. With at least another year or so of development time, it wouldn’t be surprising if this technology was even more powerful by the time it sees commercial release.
