Mass Effect 2 Announced for Xbox 360, PC

Here’s a St. Patrick’s Day treat for Mass Effect fans. BioWare, the makers of sci-fi RPG Mass Effect confirmed today that they are officially in development of the sequel, Mass Effect 2, which has a planned release date of early next year for Xbox 360 and PC. Mass Effect was originally released for Xbox 360 on Nov. 20, 2007 and for PC on May 28, 2008 in the U.S.

Details on the sequel so far are scarce. There are no screenshots yet, but BioWare has put up a teaser trailer on the game’s Web site, MassEffect.com. It looks like most of the alien allies from the first game, including Wrex, will be back, though it seems the game has special plans for Commander Shepherd. Personally, I was wondering how the game makers were planning on dealing with a customizable protagonist. Starting off with a blank slate again would seem rather disappointing.

The biggest change that I’m hoping for, though, is in the weapon management system. Anyone who played the first game must remember how annoying it was to fill up your inventory with useless weapon parts, and then have to delete them one by one to make room for new ones. Hopefully Mass Effect 2 will remedy this.

Mass Effect was planned as a trilogy from the beginning, so we can already expect Mass Effect 3 sometime in the far future, though no telling if it will be released on the Xbox 360 or if Microsoft will have developed a new console by then. Perhaps the Xbox 720?
