From Film to Webseries: MK Rebirth Filming This February 2011

Do you still remember that MK inspired film that had been released not too long ago?

It was a retelling of the series with familiar characters and somewhat different circumstances however preserved some character in both the situation and the cast themselves. Basically, it was Mortal Kombat had it been in the real world with it’s use of real time logic and phenomenon. I personally liked these ‘realized’ instances despite the fact it was real since the people behind the script still kept the ‘creep’ element nonetheless. Unlike the MMA/action pased/weak storyline approach by the previous films, Rebirth was shot in noir-style with a horror feel to it. It was darker with a depth to it, but still kept to its source material: brutal and violent with a penchant for death. Elements of the original were referred to and paid homage to in the short film aptly called ‘Rebirth’, as it was meant to ‘reboot’ the series from the perspective of the team behind it.

Initially, the short film was released as a teaser for both fans and the company, to see how their reimagined take of the popular franchise would be received. It was met with confusion as gaming websites thought that they were marketing strategies employed for an upcoming game as well as conflicting accounts from the cast members themselves. In the end it was confirmed that the people behind the film and those at Nether Realm were separate and working independently. Even with all that, the short film was well received with fans quite pleased with the trailer. Perhaps this was owing to the more recent MK films that were definitely below satisfactory? Perhaps indeed…

Rebirth was first put on as a possible full length movie however a more recent report has debunked such. Instead, it will be filmed as a 10 part webseries under Warner Bros. It will be still filmed by the man behind the short film Kevin Tancharoen with Spartacus: Blood and Sand writers Todd  and Aaron Helbing penning the script.
